Agricultural

Since 2008, we have been involved in various aspects of the small hydropower industry, for both concept level, feasibility, detailed design, construction and post-construction works, and for remedial works of damaged works. We have worked on over 42 different projects in this industry, in all aspects of design and even construction management.

Major Hydropower Projects

Our firm has been engaged under long term contracts for BC Hydro, both in the construction management field, resident engineering and design engineering. Some of our noted accomplishments for BC Hydro include the Ruskin Dam Rehabilitation project in 2015-2018 (Resident Engineer), and Site C Clean Energy Project (2019-2021, Senior Construction Manager for Main Civil Works). Smaller projects completed directly for BC Hydro include Walter Hardman Dam Toe Drain Evaluation and Sechelt Dam Toe Refurbishment and Drainage Improvements, as well as some transmission line works.

More information on the works completed directly for BC Hydro are found here.

The agricultural industry is rapidly expanding into industrial level capacity, while the land base on which farms are traditionally located are very poor. The efficient use of the land base have complex and unique problems, requiring innovative engineering solutions requiring a pragmatic approach.

Commercial projects, including residential single family and multi-family homes are included in this portfolio. Projects can be retaining walls, foundations, forensic investigations of failures, and can be as complex as subdivision type of works.

Types of Clients

Over the years, we have established niche with contractors, particularly those that are under design-build or alternative delivery models (such as EPC, EPCM) or traditional bid-build models where some aspects of the work have been passed on to the contractor to retain appropriate designs. In these cases, the need for innovative solutions that are cost-effective are paramount as well as response timing.

In this category, which is by far our largest clientele, a niche has been established. The size of a typical client varies from medium sized contracting entities to large, multinational construction companies. Services range from simple trench excavation reviews, to complex support of excavation design and construction advice after providing assistance in traffic staging schemes to optimize construction sequences in larger projects.

  • Highway 99 Steveston Interchange, design of lock block walls and shotcrete anchor abutment supports,

  • Patullo Bridge Replacement project, general services contract which included pavement evaluations, utility support designs, pre-construction inspections, crane pad designs, excavation support and designs, temporary support of excavations, shotcrete wall design and construction support, MSE / Lock block walls and design, and many other assorted tasks. Under this project, over 3 years, we have completed over 150 assignments over varying scopes.

Farms

Commercial farming operations are a niche clientele with unique demands. Often situated in agricultural lands which are geotechnically some of the most challenging environments, commercial farming operations are optimizing land use resulting in larger structures on smaller footprints, requiring complex foundation solutions. Coupled with regulations which are unique to farming applications results in a complex solutions, for complex problems.

Our client base for farming has included operations from Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Delta, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Chilliwack.
